IN SEARCH OF THE GHOST ROAD
LANDSCAPE AS INSPIRATION
Join Charis Cotter for an insightful walk into the landscape of her latest novel, The Ghost Road.
Sunday, June 23 - 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon
Meet at Seaside Blue Happiness Cottage - Western Bay (directions below)
How does an author transform the world around them into fiction? Inspiration comes in many forms, but for children’s author Charis Cotter, setting always comes first. Her latest novel, The Ghost Road, takes place in a landscape much like the one she sees out her window in Western Bay.
Participants will meet at her house to briefly talk about the setting of the book. Then Charis will lead them on an hour’s gentle hike to the deserted community of Bradley’s Cove.
Three locations will be highlighted that are featured in the novel—the Ghost Road, the meadows and the root cellar. Charis will read from the appropriate passages and explain how each was transformed into her fictional landscape. The root cellar, circa 1835, is one of the only root cellars in Newfoundland with a slate ceiling, and Bradley’s Cove is one of the hidden gems of the spectacular coastline of Conception Bay North.
This event is free - but please register by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org, Subject line Ghost Road and let us know how many will be coming along on journey.
Getting there - Take the South Side Road in Western Bay, where the sign says "Bradley's Cove." Drive to the last blue bungalow on the right, with the blue garbage box. Parking in driveway or down the road.
Rain, sleet, snow…. the event will unfortunately be cancelled if the weather is a misery. Fingers crossed the sun smiles.
